Most complete landscaping projects that cover both front yards and backyards generally stay within a certain theme or style. The  only basic difference will usually be that front yards will most always have a different purpose than backyards. Select trees with a shape that can match the overall design of the house. Steep angle roofed homes will most always look best with trees like Spruce and Birch which are pyramid shape. For dwellings that have the low lines of the ranch style,  the horizontal or round shape of maples and dogwoods works very well.

Aside from the plants and trees, the open lawn is also important in many landscape design styles since it can provide an excellent setting for the house. A lawn on the front yard with uncluttered flower beds, shrubs and ornaments can create the illusion of extra space. Keep in mind that shrubs can appear to be floating and out of place if left out of the cultivated beds or groups.
